The House of the Future - 21st Century Edition
By Linda | February 13, 2008
My last post featured 1957’s take on the “the House of Tomorrow”. In 2005 the Science Channel produced a two part series depicting an updated view on what our domiciles might be like in the not-too-distant future. It’s called Deconstruction: House of the Future.
Host and Carpenter Steve Hanneman of HGTV’s Designed to Sell guides us as the series witnesses the construction of a house of the future to discover how it will keep us safe and relaxed, entertained and connected. The science behind new building materials and procedures, renewable energy technologies, and smart technologies are explored.
Concrete has been around forever, but a building material called Autoclaved Aerated Concrete offers energy efficiency, sustainability and amazing fire resistance. The factory that produces this material explains its composition.
A robotic house-building machine is in development that will build homes on earth, and even on the moon! The space program is also bringing products like Aerogel insulation to home building.
Renewable geothermal energy from the earth, solar and wind power could become the key to energy sustainability. Smart house technology is likely to take a bigger role in taking care of us at home and is fast becoming increasingly powerful and easier to use. The house of the future is here, and Deconstruction brings it to you.
The series is available from Amazon.com but you can take a good look at it right here on a clip I found on YouTube.
