Fashions in Foil

By Linda | March 12, 2008

I am endlessly amused by what yesteryear imagined that the world of tomorrow would look like. Why do you suppose they thought we’d be wearing so much aluminum foil in the future - especially in the form of jumpsuits? Elevated radiation levels perhaps?

With that I give you an assortment of funky and fabulous futuristic fashions featuring foil…

The aluminum foil budget for “Lost in Space” must have been staggering!

Ray Walston in “My favorite Martian” proves that foil is not just for Earthlings.

These production stills from “The Day the Earth Stood Still” clearly illustrate that  foil jump suits are equally flattering on both humans and alien robots.

The Italians demonstrate their flair for future fashion with the addition of some stylish silver headgear in the low budget 1968 film “Danger: Diabolik”.

Here we see the “housewife of tomorrow” as envisioned by the 1970 UK TV program “Tomorrow Today”. One wonders why removable chain mail sleeves seemed a useful fashion accessory for the futuristic woman.

In the 1960 version of “The Time Machine”, H.G. Wells uses his machine to travel forward to a time somewhere in the late 20th century when the detonation of nuclear bombs is presumably a common occurrence. In the sequence pictured above he encounters an old man who is sporting a very stylish foil jumpsuit.

Dr. Evil of “Austin Powers” continues the trend in this sporty two piece foil ensemble complete with matching shoes.

Check out this 1930’s look forward to fashion in the year 2000.  It includes a dress of “al-oo-MIN-ee-um” - The man’s ensemble at the end of the clip is of course the ubiquitous jumpsuit - complete with a built-in mobile phone!  All he needs is a bluetooth!

What do you do with your foil fashions when they outlive their usefulness? Recycle them of course!
