Go replicate me a sandwich, will ya?

One of my favorite television series used to be Star Trek: The Next Generation. I loved all of the gadgets they came up with as well as the pseudoscience they used to explain them. There was just enough truth there to make one believe that those devices were really viable. Heck, I even bought a manual that contained diagrams and tech specs for the Enterprise. How geeky is that?!

My two favorite STNG devices were the Holodeck; the ultimate in virtual reality simulators and the food replicator. The food replicator was particularly appealing to me because it solved one of the big problems associated with lengthy interstellar space voyages. It served to recycle the waste materials produced by the crew back into tasty and nutritious foods by reconfiguring basic organic materials. The following YouTube video demonstrates a mock up of a food replicator that was created for the 2008 CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas. Not the dish I would have ordered…
