A round watermelon can take up a lot of room in a refrigerator and the usually round fruit is awkward to store. In Japan, where space in urban population centers is at a premium, a simple yet effective solution has been found.

For quite a few years now, clever Japanese farmers grow the square fruit by inserting the baby melons into square cases while they are still growing on the vine. Genius!

While visiting Disney World last November we saw very similar technology being used to grow Mickey Mouse shaped pumpkins. Next time you are at WDW don’t miss the “Behind the Seeds” tour at the Land exhibit in Epcot. Character-shaped produce is just the beginning of the innovations going on at the Epcot greenhouses.
