what do you see?

By Linda | January 12, 2009

Here is yet another assortment of fascinating optical illusions.

Try and see how easily you can master your eyes and brain by flipping these images to percieve them first one way and then the other.  Mental calisthenics!

Optical Illusion

This last one is my favorite as well as the trickiest to see both ways.  Is the woman spinning to her left (counter clockwise) or to her right (clockwise)?  Well, it can be seen both ways!  It may help if you look at the reflection of her feet rather than directly at the image.  The switch happens when her legs cross each other.  The direction in which she appears to spin depends on which leg your brain interprets as crossing in front of the other.

So brain boggling is this illusion that many people have convinced themselves that the animation is changing directions periodically.  Truly, it’s not!  A teacher showed this gif to a classroom full of students and asked each of them to speak up when the image changed directions.  The students saw the change at different times which would not have been possible if it were the animation that were changing rather than individual perception.

So Cool!

I was excited to find a great science website for my 9 year old son. Until I followed the page of optical illusions down to a completely naked woman spinning to form an “optical illusion.” And the caption explaining a teacher had shown it to her class?! I’m very offended and disappointed that this is considered appropriate for children. This illusion could easily be created with a less graphic image.

I see the woman wearing a leotard or body suit. It never occurred to me that anyone would assume that she was naked. Hmmmm, that gives me an idea for another post…
